Race Relations 2007- A journey backward

Everyday that I turn on the radio, look at tv or check news stories on the internet, I see more indicators of racial inequality and insensitivity. I feel that the nation is becoming more and more separated as it relates to race issues. Americans are losing their humanity and are instead focusing on the race card. America has never been a Utopian society but the last couple of months have been real indications that the Great Race Divide still thrives in America.

Some recent observations:

**The big to-do made about Bill O'Reilly's comments after he had dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at Sylvia's Restaurant. Apparently on O'Reilly's show he said that he was surprised that this black establishment was run and the patrons were enjoying themselves the same as he would see at a typical Italian restaurant. Someone captured his comments from his show and sent them out over the black media networks as if this was the most racist thing Bill O'Reilly has said. Being truthful about what your perceptions are is necessary for individual growth. I thought it was great for Bill O'Reilly to confront his own misperceptions and acknowledge to his listening audience that he was wrong about black patrons and service at a black restaurant. But, instead of making this a somewhat enlightening moment, it was turned into a racially divisive comment.

**Megan Williams, an African American alleged torture victim in Logan County, WV. In the article in the Charleston Daily Mail, the majority of the case focuses on Ms. Williams having been charged with writing bad checks. There is no anger put on the alleged acts of her torturers making her eat rat feces or holding her captive. In fact, her being a torture victim was merely a footnote of this story. I do not want to make light of the bad checks that she wrote which amounted to a little over $500. But, I think her being a torture victim is the bigger story and should have been treated as such. I wonder if this article about her writing bad checks was written to make her a less sympathetic victim. I wonder. See for yourself:

**The Jena 6 case in Louisiana. Many whites didn't see the inequality in charging black teens for attempted murder in a fight even though white boys in the same town who committed the same kind of act against a black teen weren't charged at all. Additionally, many mainstream news outlets didn't even carry the story until famous black radio personalities "sounded the alarm."

What do we gain as Americans by turning against each other? What progress do we make? We continue to fight each other over matters of race instead of reaching toward each other to triumph over issues of humanity.

I think you make some good points but what the white people did in Jena was no where close to the same thing. I think it is sad that it is such a racist community but lets face it beating a kid after he is already unconscious is not the same thing as what the white kid did. I really don't think the nooses hung by the kids should be a real hate crime. Maybe if it was done at one their homes or was more personalized maybe. Nonetheless it was a tasteless act that deserved punishment. Sometimes kids really don't know the true meaning significance of nooses. I thought a month in an alternative school and two weeks in school suspension was somewhat appropriate. But this storied has been really slanted from the very beginning like an there being an all-white jury. There was a 150 person jury pool including black people but they did not show. The fight that occurred at a private party a police report was not filed. The one kid had a good record and got a simple battery charge. I am pretty sure the shotgun incident at the gas station was pulled out of fear. As the seven on one beating proved that these kids jumping him was a possibility. I have heard rumors that he was robbed at the same gas station three weeks before. I think that white people more than anything feel like racism goes both ways. True there may have been some race involved in the situation but how come everytime there is a protest it is behind violent criminals. I mean recently going back to the
OJ case. How would you look at all the black support for that murderer if you were white. It did not make any sense to white people it was so obvious that he was guilty but yet we saw arenas full of black folks. Micael Bell is not a good person in our eyes and neither is Michael Vick. We just think that the responsibility of dealing with black criminals is so much to deal that of course everything might not be perfect all of the time but what is for sure is that if it was perfect equality in the justice system then it was still be disproportionately filled with blacks. I know most generations at this point have a hard time not judging the overall black race as not violent and loud. Along with immoral standards being celebrated everyday with an emphasis on the coolness of robbing, killing, and dealing. Really what would you think if you examined the violent crime statistics and saw that a black man is 15 time more likely to murder a white man and so on dealing with the statistics. Then all you heard was Megan Williams, Michael Vick, and so on. I just think there is nothing white people will do that will make the justice system better. If we would try then it wouldn't work, we would be trying to hold the black man down. But I tell you what degrading woman, promoting crime, and telling yourselves that your living so bad is not going to help. Is poverty really that bad. It seems that hispanics who are used to living a lot poorer just love America and work very hard for a living. But there is such a strong sense of entitlement amongst blacks. Working is not easy we know but think about all the hard working white Americans that work so hard for their money to give it to causes like welfare, prison systems, and public housing to see the system get abused. I
know a lot of black woman who have kids just to get more welfare. I am aware of what my ancestry did and am not proud of it but the white man is not the devil and is not the only race capable of such a thing. Africans have slavery in parts of the continent right now. Look at the violence going on and it is not because of the white devil. This world is the survival of the fittest and Americans fought hard for their land. There are fights for territories everywhere in the world. Sorry if we outsmarted the competition to make a better life for ourselves. The beauty of the country is that it is open to all walks of people and that great system will always fight to defend itself. I am not saying I am proud of some of the methods used but I think people should continue to get more civilized. I am one of those people who believes in what is right and I think the more interaction with other races that we have makes this a great unique place but it needs work. I think there has been a lot of effort made by white people to accomodate other races easy or not. But I think now it would be a good idea for the finger to stop being pointed at us so much and do things to correct the problems within the black subculture. I think it will happen in time but like Bill O'Reilly said Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are living in the past and in a state of denial.
